Beartooth Highway
Charles Kuralt once dubbed the Beartooth Highway as the most scenic highway in America. I haven't seen all the highways, but he was a smart man. This spectacular road runs from just outside the northeast corner of Yellowstone park through southern Wyoming and into Montana. All along the nearly 70-mile stretch, your eyes behold the beauty of the Absaroka and Beartooth Mountains - glaciers, lakes, occasional wildlife, and otherworldly vistas galore. It is the highest drive in either state, with over 20 peaks surpassing 12,000 feet. Timing is everything, as the road is usually only open from late May to early October because of heavy snowfalls. Make sure to stop along the way at The Top of the World Store and check out the glorious candy selection at the unique Montana Candy Emporium in Red Lodge.
